I am installing some new windows in the house and i am going to finish the trim on the inside with some red oak. I am looking for suggestions on what would be a good top coat for the wood to protect it from moisture and uv (fading).

Suggestions for finishing mahgany quilt rack

I'm working on a quilt rack/shelf using African mahogany. I plan on using a pore filler and then a dye to darken it a bit. I would like to finish it with a glossy coat. If left to my own, i would just use some glossy wipe on poly since i've used that before, but since it won't have a lot of...

I am refinishing my mother oak kitchen table and chairs. I have stripped the old finish off and resanded the wood. Do I finish it with Polyurethane? Do I need to stain first or nt at all? Or do I use Polycrylic? Or would Lacquer be better? :eusa_doh: :BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:

    New finishing question

As the heat stroke weather is passing, I am now getting back to restoring my grandparents antiques. I do want to thank John (NewtonNC) for his advice on the end table. I have now corrected the errors I made earlier on. :BangHead: John and I had a long talk and he gave me some really good...

    Finishing Red Cedar and Cypress

Anyone have a good suggestion as to what to use to finish ERC and Cypress for outdoor use? (Swings, outdoor furniture etc.) Would like to keep the natural look as much as possible with little to no "gloss." Any experience with any of the Thompson's Water Seal products?

    Finishing Pens?

What do you use to finish your pens? So far, I've only used the CA glue which gives a nice glossy finish, however it a bit of a PITA with spirals (applied on the lathe). I'd like to find a glossy finish that can be applied on the lathe and able to be handled immediately without fear of...

Well.. I am rounding the bend, and will be starting assembly of a black walnut bed in the next week or so. The last time I made a plea for finishing suggestions on this board, I got the suggestion for my chessboard, and couldn't have been happier, so I'll give it another go! I am in need of...

    finishing padauk

I have a small piece of padauk I am turning for a pocket watch. I know the dust gets everywhere and it appears to stain. Should a coat of sanding sealer and 3 coats of wipe on poly be enough to finish it?

    Finishing Sander vs Random Orbit

My projects have gravitated more toward case goods recently. I use an ancient Craftsman finishing sander which uses a 1/3 sheet and is selectable for straight line or orbital. I THINK it does everything I need but it's so old that I'm toying with the idea of getting something newer. Right now...

What's the best way to dispose of finishing products?

What do you guys do with your excess mineral spirits, lacquer thinner, denatured alcohol, poly, lacquer, shellac etc.? I live in the country so I go out into the woods to dump stuff. This makes me feel a bit guilty. Is there a better way? Thanks.

    Finishing Baltic Birch...

I'm in the process of cutting down some Baltic birch ply for new tabletops in my restaurant. Would Zinsser's shellac sealer help with stain absorption if I stain them? The shellac would go on first I assume. Thanks!:-)

    Pen Finishing Options...

:eusa_thin I'm just wondering about the differences between the various finishes that people use on pens. Starting off, we all have pretty much worked with the friction polish method. It seems the progression then goes to learning a CA finish and perhaps moving to lacquer if the facilities...

    Another finishing question re: poly

I started a new thread because it is a different type of question. This question is in ref to poly. I built several of those pyrex glass dish holders from a recent Wood article as Christmas presents this year. In the same issue, it talked about why poly is good for items that may be exposed...
