I am considering building a simple chainsaw mill at my house . First question; is there a way to have timber cut from personal wood stock at a saw mill and how expensive is this? Second is there an ideal size for chainsaw blade length? Or is it made to use.
It's more of a cheat really... I mentioned it in the Jatoba thread but figured I'd share separately as well.
A little history first: I build drums out of my shop...err... garage... My preferred method of applying finish is with an HVLP gun and my compressor. My spray area is about 3 feet away...
Happy Easter Sunday!
I am currently try to finish a mahagny table top. I alreay applied a water dye and a layer of shellec. I was originally thinking of using oil based paste filler, but could not find it. Is it oaky to use water based paste filler on top of shellec? I read that water grain...

I was reminded at the picnic that I needed to report back on the shop reorg that started at the shop crawl in November. For those that were there I put a scaled graph paper in the middle of the shop and asked for ideas on rearranging it. Well no one was shy and I have implemented most of the...
I would like to share a water based finishing system from target coatings (targetcoatings.com) that I think is not just as good, but better than any other I have used. I started out using waterlox oil based on cabinets, urethane based for high traffic and a nice french polish with dewaxed...
I've dissolved the dye in denatured alcohol and both sprayed and wiped it, but I'm getting a lot of "spotting" and streaking from what looks like the solvent evaporating too quickly.
The problem is that I'm having a heck of a time getting rid of these and getting the color on four different...
Any recommendations for a non-oil based deck sealant. Oil-based products contain BLO or other soy based oils and they can be food for algae and mildew to grow on the deck surface. I have a 365 sq. ft. deck on the north side of my house. AFAIK it has never had anything done to it. It was pretty...
I just dyed the surface of a TV Stand. I intend to apply water based ploy afterward. My question: Do I need to apply a sealer coat in between? Will the water based poly smear the water soluble dye?
Thanks for any help.

Stopped by the Big lot in north High Point today, found they had the water based poly for sale $5.00/gal. They also had stains at $5.00/gal. Smaller sizes are available from $1.50 up. If some one needs these, the prices are good:gar-Bi.
I've ordered some Target USL waterborne lac and was curious about what I can use for stain. I have been using water soluble dye recently and have been happy with the results. I do have a stock of oil based stains and was wondering can I use the target spary lac over let's say a Minwax stain...
Knowing I needed some sort of dust collection but not seeing too many other systems around here, I opted to use PVC pipe for my shop lines. I bought a 2hp double bag setup, replaced the bottom bag with a clear plastic bag and made a remote on/off switch that sets above my workbench. After...
I am used to using either the Arm R Seal & Seal a Cell or BLO/Behlens Rock Hard Varnish...all wiped on. I would like to move to water based for my next project but have not used any in the past. I was wondering what water based poly finishes you folks use, how you apply the finish and if you...
Are they compatible??? I have a project where I want the durability of poly without the off gassing, and I would like to stain it with a oil based stain that I've used for other pieces for a good match.

After spending 7 hours spraying a large project with one coat of primer and 3 coats of latex I can not help but wonder if I could do it with less coats and get better results using a white pigmented water base lacquer. I recall John talking about it in his finshing class and was wondering if...
For those of you using the USL water based finishes, where is the cheapest place to get it. I saw some in Klingspoor that was a bit on the high side and only a quart at that. Their price on a quart is more than I have been paying for a gallon of pre-cat lacquer. Can't stomach that kind of...
Need pointers on using Behlen Water Based Grain Filler. The can I have is called Neutral which is kind of light cream/white colored. Should it be tinted with a tint near the same color of the wood or the stain to be used or what? Any info would be helpful. I had planned to use in on red oak but...
