After a very long time, I completed my first attempt at a Rocking Chair. A couple of years ago WoodWrangler mentioned this guy http://www.kappelusa.com/ in one of his posts. He emailed my a Word document with some general directions and I proceeded. Many lessons were learned; the biggest one...
Nothing fancy, but this is the new design, or at least probably will be, for the dining chairs to go with the new table. Only little difference from normal construction is the side rails are morticed in to the back legs on the large chamfer that runs the full height of the leg. This detail picks...
I was asked by a person who refinishes and repairs old furniture to make a replacement spindle for a chair he was working on. It is 19.5 inches long and very thin. I don't do a lot of spindle work, but was still able to get this one close, I think. A spindle steady would have been nice.

I have 4 to "refinish" for a friend of mine, but I'm pretty much clueless about how to go about it! :help:
These are fairly old I think, but they are sturdy and I don't know what kind of wood they are. I've kinda washed them off by hand with some mild soap & water as a starting point. Cane...
Doug Robinson and I have been "semi" working on building a pair of Hal Taylor style rocking chairs. I say "semi" as we have been VERY slow, and haven't done much to them in QUITE a while. They are challenging, and following Hal's plans are at times a challenge.
All in all, it hasn't been...
Alrighty then,
After my previous jigfest/what am I building post, most of you guessed correctly that all the jigs were in fact for a rocker. The rocker in question is a Hal Taylor plan rocker with some changes to both his front legs and his arms.
The wood is Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) w/...
I have a set of plans and templates for an Adirondack chair but the LOML wants rockers. Does anyone know the radius for the rocking rail on an Adirondack rocker? I figure I can build the chairs and add the rocker rails. Thanks in advance for your help.
Scroll saw work ( and several other of my hobbies ) require sitting at a workbench or assembly table.
Anybody recommend a good source and/or style?
I know I'd like to have a back rest, padded seat, swivel, and probably a foot ring if the stool is high enough to need it.
My finely tooned...
I just found this site recently from the recommendation of a friend. Looks like there's a pretty good group here with lots of interesting things going on. I saw a couple of threads I'd like to respond to, so I signed up and here I am. I'll be doing some lurking from time to time, but mostly I...
Last summer I bought a copy of John Alexander's "Making a Chair from a Tree". This past spring I got a red oak log and started making a chair from a tree. Made a modification to the plans. Changed the way the front top rail was made, more like the way Brian Boggs makes his. (Thanks for letting...
The chairs are crafted using traditional hand tools and methods along with some contemporary methods. They are finished with the traditional milk paint topped with boiled linseed oil.
