Baseball Bat: How do I cut the Maple log and dry the bat blanks?

Got a nice Maple log last weekend that I think can produce about six baseball bats? Questions: 1) Is one type of Maple better than another for baseball bats? 2) Is there a particular way I should “remove” the bats from the log? 3) How do I dry to prevent warping and twisting? Probably enough...

Anyone tried drying wood in a microwave?

I have a Black (Wild) Cherry tree that just came down. Thinking of trying to use some to build a Ukulele. Anyway, I plan to try and split or saw off some thin slabs, and if that works then sticker and weight them down. Small enough to keep inside on a shelf. Plan to melt wax over the ends...

    wood drying when

This may need to be combined with my previous thread of "wood drying", but it is a parallel subject. After getting responses on the previous thread and being a bit "green" myself, I got to wondering if there is a chart somewhere that says for example, white oak is best cut and dried during this...

    wood drying

How long (I know you can't say for sure) does it usually take for lumber to air dry once it has been milled. I am looking a having some trees milled and didn't know how long that I would have to store them before I could actually use them. I have poplar, oak and maple that I am looking at milling.

    Air drying question

I am buying about 600 bd ft of green lumber (oak and cypress) from a sawmill and taking it back to a building I own (miles away from my shop) for storage and drying. I will sticker it right, but will not have much air movement. This building has ceilings about 15' high, cement block walls...

DNA Method For Drying A Bowl

This is admittedly a very small sample but... a 12" green polar bowl and a 10" green poplar bowl soaked in DNA a few weeks ago are both just about dry and ready to finish. A green 8" walnut bowl that was nonetheless not nearly as wet as the poplar was turned last week and not soaked in DNA. I...

    Drying OAK

I have dozens of 9-12 foot OAK boards straight from the sawmill. I currently have them stacked with stickers (also OAK) in my unheated garage. Since I don't have access to a kiln, how should I dry these boards, and how long should it take? I did coat each end with latex paint as advised in...

    Stickers for wood drying

I currently have several stacks of different species of wood air drying. Most of it is stickered with 1 1/4" spacers ( I had a lot of old deck balusters from a deck expansion project). Pine seems to be drying fine, but the cherry, sweet gum and oak are starting to check (i.e. split on the...

    experience with air drying pecan?

Does anyone have experience air drying pecan? I have about 350 bf of 1 x from 6-18" by 8 feet. We sawed it last week and it is now stacked (with stickers) in a shed. Should we have it kiln dried? Does it check and warp a lot. Any advice would be helpful.

    Drying and sanding LDD bowls

Hi all, I am looking for people using the LDD (Liquid Dish Detergent) soaking method on their turnings. What I am most interested in is their strategies and routines for drying and sanding. Do you wait for a certain amount of time before sanding? Do you sand right after you do the file cuts...

    BLO Not Drying

I used a foam brush to wipe BLO on three cauls I made out of oak. After 5 mins, I wiped off any excess. 24hrs later, I touch the wood, and see BLO on my fingers. I wiped them down a second time, and 12 hours later, BLO still comes off on touch. My workshop is in my basement, which is dry and...
