Hello, I came across this log on the side of the road and thought I could use it at some point. However, with only a couple of exceptions, I have a very hard time identifying the species of a tree without leaves as a guide. One side of the wood seems to have a waviness to it; not sure if that’s...
I turned this today for my Dad's Christmas. The bowl was rough turned 10+ years ago by Ron Mechling. I bought several rough turnings from him when he got away from turning. The species was not marked on the blank. Any idea what it is? The wood had a yellow color to it, and was fairly hard, like...
I have been looking around for a good book on how to identify wood species. I have found a couple books, but they seem to be more academic. I was hoping that it would discuss identifying by analyzing the grain as well as leaf patterns. Any suggestions?

I was picking up some logs/limbs this morning; took a bunch of branches for someone and dumped them in exchange for the "good" pieces. I got some chucks of catalpa for carving that I know are good, but the main thing I got I am not so sure about. Via email, he thought it was a non fruiting pear...

I'm getting ready to tackle some pepper mills. Any recommendations on best/worst/never use for species?
This darkside thing is gettin' me. I never realized there was so much flat work t' gettin' something round!
I have quite a few turning blanks that are Thai species...directly from Thailand as a matter of fact. I have been told that the species are...

So now I have to go back and take each piece (lots of pieces) and identify it. Any...
I have three small projects going now that involve SYP, red oak, and poplar. I know that the SYP will oxidize and lend some nice color to the wood before finishing, but have not noticed the effects of sunshine on red oad and poplar. The pieces are already sanded to their final finish so I won't...
I just received an email from someone trying to figure out what kind of wood a certain table is made out of. She said, "It said the wood was makan wood - then hand-written, it said makan tau tree."
Does anyone know this speceis or know where I can find some info on it?
Thanks for your time,
Rod
