Finally done and wanted to post a few pics of my first bench - finished a few weeks back. Pretty much followed the Schwarz article - opted not to include the deadman.
Specs:
6' x 24"
3" top - Ash
Base - SYP
Face vise - Veritas Twin Screw w/24" on center, Ash chop w/suede leather face
Tail vise...
A 3" thick top, aprons and jaw faces made from hard Maple and on an adjustable height trestle base made from American Beech make for a solid and sturdy workplace whose height can be adjusted to suit the woodworker or the task at hand.
I have built an outdoor bench out of fir and would like to put a exterior oil of stain.
I would like the grain to show and would love to have some product recomendations.
I know it will need refinishing every year.
I have a commission for an outdoor bench similar to this one...
I am wanting cedar or cypress or something that will hold up for a couple few years, but also needs to be somewhat dry. Ideas? I am in Jacksonville, so anything past Reiligh I would need the pony exp.

Anyone happen to have a Bench dog extension table? I am looking for a router extension table for my Proshop TS and the ProMax table looks pretty nice. It can be fitted with with either a Bench Dog Prolift insert or I could go with lifts from Jessem or Woodpeckers.

I didn't put any finish on it originally. I wanted to see how it would weather. Today I just wiped off the bird poop and applied a little Teak Oil.

The portable bench is almost done. Finally. (whew) It has taken longer than I expected, guess it goes way when you are making it up as you go along.
I have gotten to use it a couple of times. I love the new vise.
It seems to be extremely rigid stout and a bit lighter than my earlier bench...
