We've been discussing a group purchase of Anchor Seal Classic (the proven blend of end sealer used to treat green log ends / bowl blanks to reduce end checks) on another thread:

http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/showthread.php?p=358312#poststop

About a year or so ago, NCWW member Gary Conklin organized a similar event, and it was well attended, with many NCWW members taking advantage of the savings. We're going to follow up on what Gary started by hosting a sequel at my farm later this month.

As a way to support NCWW, the price per gallon will include a $1.00 donation to help support the operation of NCWW.

The way that this works is that you commit on this thread for X gallons, and based upon the sum total of that we place a bulk order and schedule a date for the event at my farm in New Hill, NC (about 30 miles SW of Raleigh). Typically we will conduct the event on either a Saturday or Sunday, whichever works best for everybody. Most likely, we will plan on either the weekend of March 26th, or April 2nd, with the exception of allowing Jeff Mills to pick up his order early so that he can take it with him on his trip.

Since we are buying in bulk, each NCWW member that participates is responsible for providing their own containers. We will use a drum pump to transfer it.

On the last run we purchased in 55 gallon drum quantities, which is a significant price savings over buying 5 gallon pails or smaller amounts at local retailers.

This morning, UC Coatings quoted me $310.75 for a 55 gallon drum of Anchorseal Classic - Summer Mix, plus $126.00 for freight. If we add $55.00 for a donation to NCWW, the total price for the drum is $491.75, or $8.95 per gallon.

They also informed me that the price will go up .25 per gallon next Monday, and based upon the recent fuel price increases I'm sure that the freight costs will be escalating as well. Therefore I will plan on placing an order this Friday, March 11 in order to obtain the best price.

Here is a breakdown of the folks that have already committed:

Member name, Gallons

Ivey 10
Rob 5
Nate 5
Russ Denz 5
Eyekode 1
BobbyG 1
Maskmaker 1
Jeff Mills 10
Gofor 5
Woodlaker 3
Scott (me) 10 +
ChrisB 10
Carved Tones 1
Vetterman 1
Sully 10
Manfre 1
AshleyPhil 1
Zapdafish 1
ebrant 5

If you would like to participate, please respond to this thread with an quantity that you're interested in, and if Saturday March 26 and Saturday April 2nd are good dates for the event.

Thanks!

Scott

PS - if we exceed a total of 55 gallons, I will purchase multiple drums as needed.

Hi Scott,

I'm very interested in 10 gallons if it's available - it looks like most of the 55 gallons is already spoken for. March 26th works better for me.

Thanks,

Chris

Scott, Put me down for a gallon if there's enough. Right now either date will work for me.

I will take a gallon if there is still availability. Either date should be okay.

EDIT - I was slow about responding as I still have some from Gary's, but will kick myself someday when I run out. But if you too many people get on the list, bump me off...

Just confirming my 5 gal and that either date should be okay for me. Will be happy to GMC express some back to Goldsboro for anyone near there or points east that needs some. For those further east, we can arrange for a pick-up at my house sometime afterwards. Hate to spend the $50 for gas just for me, but will not be adding a freight charge as I am planning on going anyway. :wsmile:

Are there any local stores that sell empty gallon paint cans? Does this stuff have a shelf life?

Assuming this stuff lasts a long time and I can find a container to put it in, I'm interested in 1 gallon. The 26th conflicts with the Charlotte woodworking show and definitely can't make that. Not sure I could make the 2nd either, but it's at least a possibility. Any of the Cary folks willing to PE it?

Yup, 5 gallons for me. 26th for me and if not I'll just give my $$$ to Rob S and pick it up from him when I can.

Re: NCWW Anchor Seal group buy

Storing Anchorseal. Short summary, seven years if stored in temperature controlled conditions. Otherwise, separates and becomes lumpy after a freeze, but still somewhat usable.

I'm assuming the bulk buy is for the regular and not the winterized product?

Correct. The only difference that I'm aware of is the winterized product has 7.5% methanol added to it, and it costs us .25 per gallon more. If most of the folks wanted winterized and did not mind the extra cost (buck and a quarter more for 5 gallons), this would be an option. I'll check with UC-Coatings to see if there is any difference in how the products work in the summer.

One option would be to get one drum of summer, and one drum of winter, based upon the interest. Right now, based upon the interest thus far we're definitely looking at 2 drums.
