Hey Everyone,

I am finished with the Cedar Chest after two months of woodworking and two weeks of uploading the photos. I have enjoyed making this piece of work. It was challenging and fun, My lovly wife helped me sand, well she pretty much sanded 99% of it. She is amazing! Let me know what you real woodworkers think of my first Cedar Chest! Wooo hoooo!:icon_chee

Here are pictures of the finished product, to see more of the glue up stages please look at my woodworking projects.

Slider box without the handles

Front of chest with sawdust on the lens.

Right side/front view

Rear view, and piano hinge.

Inside view and Slider box! The Piano hinge, and toy box lid supports are from the other veneered particle board chest.

Better view of the Slider box with the custom handles. I forgot to take pictures of just that.

The finish is BLO with cabernet I think? It was a small sample packet from Klingspors, a beautiful Exotic reddish color, bloodish color.

Welp enjoy the pictures and I'll enjoy reading the comments as I always do.

You can be proud to show that piece and Rachel knows all about sanding. Knotty, grainy cedar teaches sanding! I'm guessing that the color is more vivid that the pic shows. Great job.

Yes I am sure it will be an Heirloom for years and my wife is sad about that. Since we sold it to another.

About the Raised panels, I used my kregg router table and Raised panel bit that I bought from Habor frieght, that said not to exceed 10,000 rpm's, and my router only went down to 12,000 rpm's...Welp it worked great! I hope I answered the question...

Thanks for the comments everyone, I did the best I could all coming straight from my head...No directions, just a cut out list I made and my imagination!

About withstanding the test of time I am not sure about, since the person that will be using it will be putting dishes and so forth for her college collection... But here is the bottom supports to hopefully support the weight....

One view

And another...

Enjoy... I sure did...:gar-Bi

Great job Mathew. You captured the beauty of the cedar. I kind of shy away from cedar because of the dust it creates, did you have any problems with the dust. Maybe I should give it another try, beautiful work.

OK, that explains why, the inside is shorter than the outside. I couldn't figure that out. I mean I couldn't see what I was feeling might be wrong/inconsistent. Not wrong but it just didn't add up in my brain. :eusa_thin

Hey Mike,

Are you talking about how the inside is shorter than the outside frame length? I made the bottom inside cover 3/8" of the raised panel for added strength. Is that wrong or bad, or How would you do it??? Pictures please or good explanation.

Thanks,

Matthew

Matthew, that looks GREAT! Elegant with lots of nice details. Construction looks sound to me, maybe tighten the screws in 50 years or so, otherwise don't worry about it.

Now how do I get my wife to help me with sanding... :icon_scra

Nothing wrong with what you did, it is fine.

I have a very spatial thinking brain and the space didn't add up to me, but I couldn't figure out why. I never considered the raised bottom with additional bracing as I have never seen that before.

I think, since the raised panels are running horizontally the extra bracing behind them has no effect, but that is a separate issue.

The extra bracing under the bottom will help greatly though, I like that little bit of engineering. I may have cut a dado in the bottom rail and inset the brace instead of screwing it to the rail, but your way should hold a couple hundred extra pounds.

Not criticizing in any way, just talking through my way of thinking. Which in many cases is wrong by the book but gets me satisfactory results.
