    Rust Alert Today

Temps are predicted to be in the 70s today in the Piedmont. The dewpoint right now is 56. If your shop and tools are still cold (56 or lower) from last week's cold temps they will condense water and create dew from the warm humid air. If you need to open up your shop today, better heat it...

    Electrolysis Rocks for Rust Removal!

I've been cleaning/derusting/restoring a contractor table saw I got from junquecol's stash, and decided to give electrolysis a try. My setup involved two anodes which are 1/2" rebar zip tied to some old brake rotors I had lying around after I helped my neighbor change his brakes. The rotors have...

    Rust on my table saw

I have been away from my shop for the last two weeks or so due to the start of the school year. As I was preparing things for the arrival for Irene I noticed some rust on my table saw. Most of it rubbed off with my finger but I would like to handle it before it gets to be a problem. How...

    Rust Alert Today!

The Dewpoint here is close to 70 degrees. My shop is 70 degrees. If I open the doors this means anything cast iron will start having condensation form on it...like a exhaling on your glasses to clean them. Probably a good day to keep everything buttoned up and run the heat to warm up the tools...

    Surface rust on table saw

I have some "top saver" that I have been using on my tools but am not happy with it; I can develop surface rust on my table saw within a day or two of applying this treatment. I read an old thread on this site and am now sold on the Boeshield product but would like recommendations on the...

I would like suggestions on how to prevent or slow the accumulation of surface rust on my equipment, ie jointer, bandsaw, table saw, etc. My shop is my garage, unheated and uninsulated. I've used paste wax a number of times on the unpainted surfaces but it only protects for a week or so, even if...

    Plane Ol' Rust

I just can't win ... everytime I touch my hand planes, especially the block plane, it starts to get little rust spots all over the place. I've covered it with T9, which does the trick on cast iron but it doesn't last nearly as long. It must be the moisture and acids mix in my hands that just...

    New use for Potatoes

I caught a video by Nick Engler over at the Shopsmith Hands-On site. Well, being one willing to try anything, I did. Potatoes will remove rust. Be ready to be amazed! Deal is, cut up some potatoes and fill a vat with water. Enough to cover the rusted part. After about 2 weeks, you...

    Rust for stain

Has anyone here used (purposefully) rust as a stain? Ive done some searching and only come up with a few very brief comments about it. I noticed it in my kitchen floor as i was refinishing it, that the face nailed boards had beautiful dark streaks that seemed to follow the grain like a...
