I came across this post a while back and thought it was a neat idea. I recently found a No. 78 Made in England that was missing the fence and depth stop and decided to convert it to a scrub plane à la Paul Sellers.
There was a fair bit of rust and the previous owner had put some deep scratches...
Hello everyone! My name is Will and I live in Winston-Salem. I have worked in the concert industry for many years, but have started to take time off from that to pursue other interests, one of which is woodworking. About a year ago I started working with a landscape design company here in WS...
I often enjoy using my hand tools in lieu of power tools. Making chamfers by hand is one good example, but I do a better job on some days than others. In this video, I build a 'chamfer guide' - something I find helpful when trying to chamfer the edges on a relatively long workpiece. I make...
Are these bench chisels any good? I'm considering purchasing 10 sets for my classes. Might need more frequent honing but that's not too big a deal if it's the only issue.
Opinions welcome...…...

I'm looking to see how many folks would be interested in doing a bowsaw build workshop. The material cost for this workshop would be $80.00 plus a donation of $30.00 to the website. The donation can go straight to the website, and the material fee can be payed directly to me at the workshop...
Just wanted to let everyone know that we have two local or what we call Area meetings of the Mid West Tool Collectors Association coming up in the near future. M-WTCA is for those that collect, use and just appreciate antique/traditional primarily hand woodworking tools and related. To give you...
I couldn't find stop hinges that would work in the orientation I needed, so...shoestrings to the rescue! Open to ideas for other solutions I could've used. Chains I think would interfered with the closing of the lid. Thanks.
Squaring stock is possible without these, but these should help a lot. So far I've made a 16" set and also a 12" set. I think I want to make a 26" set to finish it off, but I don't have a log that long to split down. Filmed a video making these. Click here for the video. As also any tips are...
Hello all,
Just recently joined NCWW. I do plenty of carpentry work in my off time when I can, but I want to get into the finer areas of woodworking. I figured the best place to ask questions would be the place with largest amount of woodworking knowledge available to me. So here I am haha...
I had a slab of 8/4 mahogany left over from a bar project and had a friends wedding plus my wedding anniversary to make gifts for. I chose to make a somewhat traditional candle box. I added a flame maple sliding lid to liven things up a bit.
There were a few firsts for me with this project...
I took a shot at the Book Box from the Joiner and Cabinet Maker. I believe Thomas had 6 hours to complete this project. I wasn't even close.
It was an interesting project with lots and lots of clenched nails. Also, the idea of marking square on the bottom boards and nailing the sides on before...
Finally finished ( well almost ) a Nicholson Bench. This is my first real bench. Learned quite a bit about hand tools. Flattening the top taught me to let the hand plane do the work you just need to move it in the right direction. Its interesting moving more towards hand tools. At first I...
Hi, everyone! I just want to give a quick intro. I'm excited to be here and eager to learn as much as I can about the never-ending possibilities and world of woodworking. I'm a self-taught beginner with the very basics in knowledge as well as tools (circular saw, power sander, jigsaw, miter...
Hi all

Hello All,
I have recently joined after being introduced to the site by "Glennbear".
I retired for North carolina a few years ago and have moved to a log home my wife and I built in Virgina just over the stateline from NC where I still do shopping and visit often.
I built a wood shop here...
I've been building my hand tool collection lately and I just wanted to share a couple of my latest finds and maybe yall can share a couple of yours. I rely on hand tools quite a bit, even when I have a power tool that can get the job done and these additions I will be able to put to good use...
Attempting to build a workbench with only hand tools. So far I am just working on 2 slabs of fir 4"x11"x8'. I am trying to hand plane them flat. I seem to only be reducing the height. Every time I attack a high spot or warp I seems to go too far then have to take the whole thing down some more...
Last night I had a chance to mess around with one of my hand planes I bought at an Antique show a few weeks back. I have done nothing to it yet I just wanted to play with it and see if I could figure the thing out. What a ton of fun. I can't wait to get both of them tuned up and use them on...
