I want to build some cabinet doors that will have a flat panel insert. The doors will probably be no larger than 18" X 36". Which would be the preferable method to attach the rails to the stiles - Lap joints or Pocket Screws with plugs? I don't have the means yet to do good quality mortise and tenon or loose tenon joints.

Thanks.

Rick, since doors tend to get a fair amount of use, based on the two options you offered I would go with the half lap joints for the rail and stiles.

I've done doors like that using a groove and stub tenon method and they have held up fine, but I would agree that a lap joint would provide more glue surface.
