Steve:
Several folks have given you some good advice. But here's the very best advice to be had on turning of any kind.

Hook up with your local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners.

You'll find them to be the most helpful and willing bunch of folks anywhere (except for this site, of course). North Carolina is very blessed with some of the very best woodturners and turning club in the world. this site will give you a listing of North Carolina clubs and contacts.

You have The Woodturners Guild of North Carolina meeting at The NC State campus once a month.

The President, Frank Penta, and Vice President, Alan Leland are both very accomplished, and world reknowned turners who understand and are more than willing to help novices. One of the goals of The AAW is to teach new turners. Ther is nothing like having a person show you first hand how to use a turning tool and then place the tool inyour hands and letting you do it. Contact these guys and give their club a visit.

Of course, if you'd rather be a part of the best and largest local AAW club in the world, you're more than welcome to join me and a bunch of others from about 5 different states the third Saturday of each month at The Carolina Mountain Woodturners in Asheville ath the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

By the way, Neve, ever use a spindle roughing gouge on a bowl (or bowel for that matter).
