    Mystery pipe found....updated...mystery solved

While digging a trench for a pvc drain pipe today, I discovered a 4" solid corrugated pipe next to the trench I was digging. The pipe ran along the chimney at about 6" below ground and went deeper on each end of the chimney. The pipe was laying on the ledge of the chimney foundation and it...

    Mystery (to me) wood?

Who knows what species this is? This is a 16" section from a tree I cut down on my property, and I don't know what it is. When I saw the black streaks, my initial thought was black gum / tupelo. But I've looked at a number of pictures on the web and this tree doesn't look like any of those...

Sierra Click Pen and mystery wood

Just made a Sierra Click Pen and used a piece of wood given to me and have no idea what it is. Anybody got a quess? The wood is hard but easy to turn. My thoughts are a nut wood - hickory, pecan, buckeye!!! James

    Jointer/Planer mystery solved....

After years of wondering, I've found the "answer" to an annoying planer dilema I experienced at a woodshop class at Durham Tech. I hope this tale can save someone a bit of the grief I went through. I ran some rough stock over the jointer, just happy as a clam. I jointed it on both...

    16in Jointer Mystery

Well friends the mystery continues. There are no names on the jointer I picked up last weekend. I pulled the blades off and found a name on the blades. The Wapakoneta Machine Company, Wapakoneta, Ohio. USA. I know blades come from different manufactures than the jointer's, just thought it would...

    Another mystery wood?

I have a collection of hardwood scrap from the Sacramento Capitol restoration (about a quarater century ago), and have turned one piece that my ex brother in law (a carpenter on that job) labeled as "maple". I'm not a wood authority, and perhaps it could be some maple species, but it's somewhat...

    Yet More - Mystery Wood

Ok I got a hold of what I though was a very pretty black walnut log. I sawed it this morning and now I have my doubts. I've cut a lot of black walnut this stuff smells like black walnut and kinda looks like black walnut but it's not as dark like black walnut is, as a matter of fact it's quite a...

    More Mystery Logs

Ted got some logs in the yard from a logger that came in with a load of soft maple. I looked them over and so did Ted we have no clue what they are. The bark is smooth gray and the wood is whiter than holly. The grain is supper fine with short little red streaks. The logger called them cotton...
