Ok I got a hold of what I though was a very pretty black walnut log. I sawed it this morning and now I have my doubts. I've cut a lot of black walnut this stuff smells like black walnut and kinda looks like black walnut but it's not as dark like black walnut is, as a matter of fact it's quite a bit lighter in than black walnut. It was a yard tree so God only knows what it really is? Any thoughts, Dave?

Here's a book matched set of 8/4 x 12" thats right pretty. Got about 200 BF out of this log about 150 in 15 and 12" wide 8/4 and the rest 4/4 wide stuff.

eye candy below...

That sure as heck looks like Walnut to me. I can't think of anything else it could be.

I do know it's walnut, just not too sure it's black walnut. It's pretty light, maybe it'll darken with age.

The Walnut I picked up from Mr. Patterson in China Grove also was very light brown/reddish color. No where near the nice swirl pattern you have on that piece! Very much like the Claro Kyle has.

Does anyone know what other kind of walnut grows around here?

I'm going to have to go with walnut as well, I've seen lighter variations in color near the sapwood, that's one great looking bunch of lumber. Jim

Please tell me you guys are NOT looking at my crotch...wood  In all honesty, I know it's walnut, but the heartwood is much lighter in color than any of the black walnut I've cut so far, sapwood is white just like BW, I did notice the bark was darker. I can't help but wonder if it's some kind of English walnut? The tree did come out of a yard of a long ago abandoned farm house. So I reckon it's possible it might be something funky, it's defiantly different...

Another thought; could it be Butternut? It's listed as a native tree in North Carolina, not that common though. I remembered a night stand my Grandfather made from some Butternut he got from the mountains of Maryland, was lighter than walnut, but had a nice rich dark color. Jim

Could be a different variety planted by someone a while back. I know that English, Claro and some carpathian varieties are planted here although kind of rare. They will grow. This is definately a walnut.

Butternut - Juglans cinerea, is in the same genus as Black Walnut and is often know as white Walnut. It is an excellent furniture wood, often with more defects than BW, but with a character more like Chestnut. It is also a good carving wood. It works very much like Walnut. It's good stuff and not that easy to come by due to the canker that infects the tree and leads to its demise.

Thanks Dave, I don't think I ever had any thing that was hard to come by. Except for Am. Elm, which I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and got lucky.

Ok now that I got it what do I do with it? anybody want it?

Jeff--------I have used 8/4 butternut for seats of the windsor chairs I do. It blends really well with the red oak used on the remainder of the chair after aging a while. It is a little soft and dents easily but in the artistic world you call those dents character marks:rolf: . It does carve good for sculpting the seat. Much softer than black walnut. The color is like comparing milk chocolate to dark chocolate when thinking of butternut vs BW. The last I bought was on the expensive side (about 9.50 a bf) and still had to pay shipping from Vermont. It was nice lumber though.

ok I was going to rack and stack this for an upcoming kiln dry black walnut run but since it's not BW, I decided I would like to go ahead and sell this load. It's 5 8/4" x 15" x 7 and 5 8/4" x 12" x 7 a little over 150 BF and about 50 BF in random width 4/4 x 7'. The tree was cut Thursday and milled yesterday. I got one 14' 6" long log with a butt and crotch. I cut the log in half sealed the ends with ancorseal so the lumber is 7' long.

The 15" wide lumber especially from the butt is clear, the rest is very clean.

No reasonable offerers refused to NCWoodworker.net members. If your interested please contact me on my cell phone my number is listed in the NCSawyers page, under Mills Custom Sawing, Region 3.

Thanks

Jeff, I'd take the 8/4 if you'd get it KD'd!!! I have enough wet lumber around already, but can't say no to dry stuff. LOL!!

Yep kinda figured it would need to be kiln dried, so I stacked it up to air dry a little be fore it hits the kiln. Depending on how the kiln dry QS Sycamore lumber run goes I would like to follow that up with a kiln dry BW lumber run. So we'll toss it in with that to be kiln dry, we'll dry it as BW, I'm confident Scott can kiln dry it.

Here's a few pics I also have a 16' 14" dia log that needs to be sawed came from the same tree.
