Proven finishes for QSWO

What are food safe finishes?
What are safe finishes for bowls / cups that will hold edible liquids? I know that mineral oil would probably be ok (rec'd for cutting boards). However, how does it stand up if submerged? Most of the plain oil finishes rate fairly poorly in water resistance in the reviews I have read. Also...- Matt
