I recently took a power carving class aka carving with a dremel. The instructor used the little stone bits for woodcarving and I thought that stones were for metal. Shows how much I don't know. The instructor said the color of the stones was a guide of the courseness. Does anyone have a chart or...
In this picture, am I correct when I say that this type of carving is called "Raised relief"?
2- Is this type of detail, in general, the result of having a rather extensive selection of carving tools, or is it done with a few "basic" tools?
3- What wood would be a good medium to...
This is on my wishlist for Hartville tool.

Any feedback? I have a very limited carving set. This is not something I'm planning to get into in a big way but when I need to do it I would like for the tools to be sharp and they're not. I can use my...
G'day All!
I need some help choosing the 'best' all around system for sharpening carving gouges and knives, as well as the straight stuff - chisels and plane irons. Most of my 'unplugged' woodworking is in carving and I'm trying to increase my skills to a higher level. It is obvious to...
I have always liked the hand shaped pulls on Krenov's cabinets. I would like to carve handles for a small box top and probably a cabinet door/drawer in the future.
Any suggested reading? Any recommendations on where to get started?
Thanks!

I used to have the Panivise attached to a cast iron table pedstal with a small worktop on it. Over time, it didn't prove to be nearly as convenient as I hoped. I decided the conventional approach of only freely turning the carving and not the work top makes more sense. You need the big flat...
These "peas" were turned from Ash and then treated using Behlen Solar-Lux Stain, clear lacquer, and Liming Wax. The "pod" was turned green from Basswood and then hollowed out with a Lancelot carving tool.
And despite having a bunch of unfinished projects going already, I decided to give it a try.
That's from a little cypress board Robert (Sawduster) gave me a few days ago. That is one piece of wood, all still attached; nothing glued and no hardware. My splits are way too thick, but I got the...
I took the barley twist I started at my class with the Woodwright school and started carving a snake that has a marble trail in it:
It is largely complete; a marble rolls down and stops and I have set in around the head, which I will do in shallow relief. It is poplar and it was freshly cut...
I was commissioned to carve a rooster with a University of South Carolina theme. My design blossomed from a simple rooster in USC colors to this carving.

Fans (a rooster family) heading to the game to support their favorite team. Dad wears a 'Gamecock Hat', a jersey and basketball shoes; and carries a pennant. The chicks have painted their chests so collectively they spell CAROLINA.
