About a month ago my boss (an avid craigslist watcher) saw some cypress that a guy was offering for free if someone would come and pick it up. He responded immediately and we went and picked it up. We ended up with two logs, each about 6 feet long and 8 or 9" in diameter, and a slab that was roughly 6"x6" and 6 feet long. The guy was really nice too, and after talking to him for a while, we made a deal. The wood was free as long as I turned a bowl out of it for his wife. No problem. The bowl was the first thing I did, but still need to deliver it. :BangHead: :slap:
All of it was from a tree that blew down over 10 years ago in a hurricane (Fran I think) and he had it sitting in his shed. Some of it was dry rotted, but I tried to work with it the best I could. My original design included a cross brace between the back legs with mortise/tennon joinery, but when I tried to carve out a mortise, the stuff just started falling apart. :swoon: I finished this about two weeks ago and it has been gracing our back porch and getting plenty of rain for a while. Finally got a free minute to share it with you all tonight. ccasion1
It features outside natural edge legs and arm rests and two "tractor seats". I used 1" oak dowel rods for almost all of the joinery, but added a few 3" screws to support the dowel rods connecting the seat support to the legs, as I thought this would be a vulnerable area. In the future, I might add some support under the bench seat itself, but for right now, it is all ten-year old wood from the same tree. Thanks so much for looking. :notworthy:
