Hi Brian.

It just so happens that I received the April edition of Woodworkers Journal in the mail today and they review the Bosch, Craftsman Nextec, Dremel Multi-Max, Fein Supercut, Fein Multimaster and the Rockwell SoniCrafter. A pretty read.

I bought a Bosch Multi-X from CPO tools a couple of months ago for $89, I believe, It was classified as reconditioned but looked brand new to me. This is a variable speed 12V cordless that uses the same 12V system as there driver units. It came with a H&L sanding pad, 2 batteries/ charger and a plunge cutting blade for wood. It also include an adapter plate that allows the user to use non-Bosch (ie Fein and Dremmel accessories). It seems to be a solid unit, little vibration and plenty of power for light use.

The Fein is the Cadillac of multi tools and is a great unit for undercutting door jams, removing caulk, cutting drywall etc..:icon_thum

I think that the HD Dremel deal is so-so. I would do a little price comparisons though.

Depending upon how much you are going to do with it, Harbor Feight also sells a Fein knockoff (corded) that a lot of people here have and swear by it. Price point hard to beat! $39.95, I think.

1. Is this a good deal - not really.
2. Do I need one (Duh...) of course you do..it's a TOOL!
3. How does it compare to Fein/Bosch/etc... The Fein is the best (very smooth..), the others are pretty similar.
4. Field reports please..I have the Harbor Freight version. I'm sure it's not the best, but it does the job - I'm real happy with mine. It's not an everyday tool, not unless you're a full-time carpenter/ contractor etc.. I suggest you buy the HF one ($35 with coupon) and see how you like it. You can always upgrade, and keep the HF one for drywall cutting, messy jobs etc.

I bought a reconditioned one off Amazon for $69. I have been pleased with it and have used it for both sanding and some cutting. Mine also looked brand new when I received it but had a problem with the switch soon after. I can tell you my experience dealing with Dremel customer service was great. I shipped it back to them and once they receive it they promise a 48 hour turn around. They even sent me some sanding pads with my repaired tool.
