Hey everyone! Like I said, I'm from Belews Creek, NC, for those who aren't familiar with it, it's north-east of Winston-Salem, and Northwest of Greensboro. Anyway, I was born and raised there. I joined the Navy when I got out of High School and have been in for 8 years now. I currently live in Cocoa, FL but have lived near Seattle, WA, King's Bay, Ga (near Jacksonville, FL), New London, CT, and did Boot Camp in Great Lakes (or Great Mistakes as we like to call it:rotflm:). I've lived and visited all over the US and am better for it (I think:icon_scra) but still my heart resides in the Foothills of NC. I've been around woodworking all my like as well as construction and dirt track cars. I've been slowly aquiring tools to be able to work on my own. My father and grandfather are/was carpenters and other related trades. I'm married with a beautiful wife from Tobaccoville, NC and we have a wonderful and extremely crazy 5 yr old boy. I make regular trips home to see family and friends. In my employement with the Navy, I work on Trident II/D5 Ballistic Missiles on the Ohio Class Submarines. I also am a member of the oldest fraternity and involve myself alot with that. Well that about sums it up. I'll be putting some pictures up and a picture of the maple kitchen table I just finished (well except for the finish) yesterday. Thanks for taking the time to bore yourself with me.:icon_thum

Welcome to the site Zach. Sounds like you've been all around this world. I hope that at some point you'll take your stand at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Sorry, had to do it. :slap:

Anyway, this is a great group of folks that you've found here. I really look forward to seeing some pictures of that kitchen table. :icon_thum

Here is a pic of the table. It's solid maple and also my first table. It's unfinished but I intend on finishing it with Mahoney's Walnut Oil and the Wax finish. It will be used as a chopping board and food preparation.

Well, if you can't be an aviator, being a bubble head is second best! Welcome!

Sorry about that, Bruce!

You are showing your age! I spent about 6 months on the Calcaterra (DER 390) in 1971 as an Ensign killing time between Academy graduation and flight training in Pensacola. At that time, the three remaining DER's, Gary, Kretchmer and Calcaterra, were homeported in Key West. Earlier they had been converted from DEW line patrol duty (a DER was a Radar Picket Destroyer Escort), to Deep Freeze support, and finally to intelligence collectors when the Navy needed something with a few guns to replace the Pueblo. They put the Security Group spooks in the old aerographer's shack. Calcaterra was converted to razor blades in '74.

Happy to hear you had the great fortune of a sea cruise aboard a DER. The Vance was indeed employed on the DEW Line in the Aluetian Islands area, and also Operation Deep Freeze. I was transferred to Vance in March of 1965, from USS Radford DD446, as she returned from DEW LIne patrol. However, after a short stay in Pearl Harbor, our home port, we were assigned to Operation Market Time, as the first permanently assigned ships to South Viet Nam. Enjoyed 2 lovely tropical cruises in that Paradise before my enlist thankfully ended. I served under Lt. Cmdr. Marcus Aurilius Arnheiter, the only US Navy ship's captain to be placed under arrest by the junior officers, during wartime deployment, and and turned over to base authorities in Subic Bay, PI. He was court martialed and found unfit for command. Neil Sheehan, a New York Times investigative reporter, wrote a documentary titled "The Arnhieter Affair." As a Naval Officer, you may have read it. Some information is available at the USS Vance Association website. It is an extremely well done and maitained website. BTW, I'll be 66 on Dec. 21.:eusa_booh
