I finally got my vac bagging system setup and used it to re-veneer this antique table with Rosewood veneer. I really held up on doing this until I had the system setup because I really didn't want to screw this job up. The veneer alone was $315.00 so you can appreciate my concern.

Here is the vac system I put together with components from Joe Woodworkers website(shameless plug for Joe)

And here is the top and drop leaves together to show the grain match. I think it turned out pretty good for my first bag job.

This is the table the top goes on. I had to do a lot of repair on the base and believe it or not, the majority of this base is solid Rosewood. Back when this was made, it probably was 1. Plentiful and 2. Cheeeeep.

enjoy

I veneered a few buffet's up to 10 feet long back in my days of refurbishing French anitiques.Never had a vac press.Always wanted one, should have pressed harder for one...no pun intended.
Great job on the veneer and a great looking piece of furniture.Better than new.

Mike,

Looks very good!
Like to ask you a couple of questions:
Is your bag vinyl or poly? Also what kind of glue did you use? How did you joint and hold the veneer?

Thanks,
Bernhard

Nothing like jumping in with both feet on your first vacuum veneer project. Man, that looks great!! :eusa_clap:eusa_clap

Mike,

Looks very good!
Like to ask you a couple of questions:
Is your bag vinyl or poly? I got the 30 gauge DuraMax bag which is vinyl.

Also what kind of glue did you use? I used the Better Bond dark cold press glue as shown in this link. You can get a light color or dark depending on the type of veneer you are using.

How did you joint and hold the veneer? As for the veneer, I cheated, and ordered a 4 x 8 sheet of 2 ply veneer from Bob Morgan. I ran a trial using a cheap piece blond ply and some mahogany veneer I had at the shop and just used veneer tape across the joint and also a piece long ways to cover the joint. I really didn't spend a lot of time on the trial piece but I got zero bleed through and no joints separated.

As an aside, I also purchased a piece of this stuff and it negates the use of a top platen.

My plans for the future are to make my own veneers so at time I will surely get some experience jointing and joining the pieces. If the job calls for an exotic like this one, I have no qualms about getting the pre-made stuff though.
