I had a little time to play today and I have had a couple of sycamore branch pieces laying around for a couple of years, so I made this:

While I am known for my flat work, I don't think this turned out too bad considering I don't even own a bowl gouge. Pics don't do it justice.

Enjoy

Very nice, no bowl gouge? What did you use?

I roughed out the blank with a roughing gouge and used a spindle gouge with a fingernail grind to remove the inside and shape the outside. While the walls are quite thick, I don't own a tool to shape the inside in order to get the walls thinner. I might have to either make one or invest in one if I want to continue to make these.

Please do be careful, using a "spindle" roughing gouge can be dangerous, it is really meant for smaller spindle work. If you are going to keep making them either make a simple Oland tool or invest in a good bowl gouge, Thompson gouges are very reasonable.

Looks like a perfect example that true talent is capable of moving easily into uncharted waters. Beautiful work, Mike!!
