I think you hit the nail on the head.. The bark looks exactly like Redbud.

Wow. I have an old redbud on my property that has been dying for the past 18 years (really stubborn old *^%$(!.) Almost makes me anticipate the day I have to take it out.

Looks like one of our saw meisters called it on the money.
