I am looking for recommendations on how to make a paint quality door.
I have a friend who wants to make a custom pantry door with a large piece of frosted and custom lettered glass.
He wants it painted to match the rest of his doors.

I was thinking poplar would be good for this. I imagine we want to find some really straight stock and start with 6/4 or thicker to get to 1 3/8?

Thanks for any tips!

Poplar will work fine. There should be some books available on door construction. Also check the Freud web site, If I racall they may have some info, but it will be related to their door bits. You can either use a cope and stick methid or use large dowels. Make sure your stock is straight and flat.

Depending on the size of the door, I'd use 5/4 and plane down to 1". That should be pretty good for a fairly large door. You can never go wrong with thicker stock. Don't skimp on the hinges either!
