Hey folks,

Getting my feet wet with turning, but want to make my own olander multi-tool. I can turn my handle, but where should I get the other parts? Also, is it better to use a tool sleeve with screws to hold the part in place, or use a drill chuck? Any advice or spare knowledge would be appreciated.

Earl (Erasmussen) and Matt (mraudio) taught me how to make oland tools, and I think they are AWESOME. Harbor freight has good quality high speed steel bits for them that you can sharpen anyway you want for $3 a box. Make sure you get cold rolled steel for the metal part, and you can make your handle out of anything you want. I just put a 10x24 set screw in the side of mine to hold the bit in once I drilled a hole in the cold rolled rod for it. I used simple two part epoxy to hold the steel in the handle.

I would really recommend LVL for the handle, its cheap, turns really well, looks great and is STRONG. But I also made some from ambrosia maple, and a cheap pine one from a 2x4.

Good Luck

Dan
