This is a 5 1/2" tall by 3" wide mesquite hollow form with a holly finial. The side by side is a before and after dying to illustrate the difference black can make in a finial. The HF is finished with lots of coats of WOP. Thanks for looking thoughts and critique appreciated.

I like the form and the finial. Oh and the wood georgous!

How thin do you turn his type of vessel?

Thanks Salem, the walls are less than 1/4" save the bottom which is a bit thicker for ballast. Mesquite is an absolute joy to work with wet, heard horror stories about how hard it is when dry

I love turning mesquite!
I've only had two pieces that were wet, and a good bit that was dry. And dry, it turns well and affords
you plenty of opportunity to hone your sharpening skills...
Beautiful wood and I tend to save my shavings.
Nice job on your piece.
The black I liked much better than the plain holly.

Looks great Nate! One question - how do you turn such a thin finial w/o having it grenade on you?

Hey Scott,

Sharp tools, using my finger behind the piece as I cut to "push back" against the tool and light cuts. Might try and swing up your way next week if you're going to be around. I'll drop off a good DVD for you.
