Inlay Workshop - May 21, 2016, 10 AM at Bill Clemmons' workshop in Liberty, North Carolina. All woodworkers welcome.

We have room for 11 woodworkers – first 11 people to request a spot are welcome. We will take 3
alternates in case someone cancels, so if for some reason you register and cannot make it, please let
me know so I can get an alternate a spot. You may request a spot by replying to this post, or sending a PM.

Matt, and www.inlaybanding.com will donate all inlay materials (inlay banding, stringing, thick
veneer, and other inlay materials).

The cost will be $40 of which ALL will be donated to The Isabella Santos Foundation. A Foundation dedicated
to raising research funds for a rare form of Children's cancer (nuroblastoma). Checks to be made out to the foundation,
Tax deduction forms will be provided. More information on this foundation may be found at http://www.isabellasantosfoundation.com/

Lunch: $5 for pizza, or bring your own.

A walnut and holly medallion (which we will make and inlay). IMG_4147.JPG

Attendees will need to bring a small
plank (dark wood – walnut, mahogany, sapele or other dark wood)
about 6” wide 12 - 13” long and about 3/4” thick; surfaced both
sides and sanded). No other materials will be required. If you do not
have a suitable board, please let me know and one will be provided
for $5.
If you have a particular project which requires inlays, bring it. If there is time, help may be provided.

Tools and materials you may bring: If you do not have any of these tools; don't worry about it, come
anyway, we can share.

  1. A router (preferably a plam
    router, or dremel with a router attachment, or a big one will do if
    you do not have asmall one). With a 1/4” straight bit, and an edge
    guide if you have one.

    A router t-square – if you do
    not have one, or do not know what this is, no problem – Materials
    will be provided to make a simple one.
  2. Box cutter (utility knife) with a
    new blade, or xacto knife if you prefer.
  3. Carving and straight chisels.
  4. A few spring clamps.
  5. Palm sander.
  6. Card scraper.
  7. Metal machinist's rule (6, 12 or
    18”)
  8. Wood Glue
  9. Drafting compass
  10. A small miter box preferably with
    a pull saw
  11. Pencil
  12. Rag
  13. A few push-pins

Looks like we're off to a good start w/ 5 participants already.

Matt conducted a similar workshop here in 2013. Take a look at some of the pics in this album.

Matt did a demo at Shamrock's shop in Charlotte a few years back. As I recall it was sometime in December and was a Charlotte woodworkers group Christmas get together.

He presented the actual process of making the banding materials. It was very informative and demonstrated just how much work and creativity goes into making those thin strips of inlay.

We have 7 attendees so far - room for 4 more. Here's a pic of a cellaret that I will bring along. We will do most of the inlay elements involved in this piece and discussion of how this is constructed.
