I buffed this up to 2000 grit, a quick layer of red mahogany stain (removed immediately), then minwax tung finish, polished while on the lathe. All of the wood is red oak. the handle and head are from the same piece of wood. The head was two pieces of 4/4 glued together.

Dave, that looks very sharp! Is the head portion from some crotch wood? It appears that there is some nice sworl to it.

There was a knot near by the piece that was used for the head. I actually only have one short 4/4 board of curly red oak (paid $1.50 for it!) and I had to cut two pieces and glue them together to have an 8/4 piece to use for the head. The handle has some curly in it, but not as much as the head. I also had to do a little filling with sawdust/titebond III on some voids that developed during the turning that were not exposed originally.
