Subject: Woodturners Meeting this Thursday

The month sure went by fast, and it's time for another exciting
monthly meeting of the Charlotte Woodturners!

This week's meeting:

Anatole did a great job with large hollow forms last month!
While our tradition is to have the instant gallery reflect the prior
month's demonstration, most of us are unable to turn something the
size of a Volkswagen! So this month's gallery will be wide open - big
or small, centerwork or facework, bring it all!

This month we'll be talking about, and John Benton will demonstrate,
turning rectangular bowls. I think you'll all agree that the timing
for this is perfect since my wife just got a new kitchen table and
wants a shallow rectangular bowl for fruit. Seriously though, many of
us, on our significant others, are not as excited about bowls as we
once were, and a rectangular bowl is an interesting variation that
will find an interesting use in your home.

In addition to the regular raffle of gift certificates and donated
items, we'll be selling a whole bunch of blanks for
$1 each - and we're not talking about pen blanks. This is wood that
John Benton has gathered while removing trees around Charlotte and he needs to move it out! There is a lot of nice wood, and at $1 per piece you can take some chances with your turning and if you blow something up you won't feel too bad about it. You want to be a better turner,
get some wood and practice.

Most of you know that the annual AAW convention is next week
and that we're collecting Christmas ornaments to take to the
convention. If you have any to donate, please bring them to
the meeting.

Future Meetings:

In July Bill will be presenting thin walled turning. We've
seen some of these techniques in association with the turning
of natural edged bowls and Norfolk Island Pine pieces, but
we've never focused exclusively on the various techniques for
turning as thin as you want. Please mark your calendars for July 20.

In August the topic will be on turning small objects. Many
members work with mini lathes, and this demonstration and
discussion will be all about projects that work very well
with that tool. If it isn't already on your calendar, please
mark August 17 on your calendar.

I look forward to seeing each of you Thursday!

Jim
