This is just a crappie old bowl, that is not very good, which sucks which I threw together because I didn't have anything better to do. (Sound familiar Earl??)

This is my first attempt without Charlie or Earl standing over my shoulder helping me!

You know what gets me mad? I got this entire bowl done, completely turned and sanded and finished without any catches or any problems. Then I was trying to back the metal/wood holding jig I had off the lathe, and it wouldn't budge.

So I grabbed a rubber hammer, but it's ok 'cause it's rubber right??

(I just felt the entire site cringe at their computers)

YEAH BAD IDEA!

It broke in three pieces!!!!

I glued it as best I could.... and this is what I got. Thanks a bunch to Mark (Gofor) for the Sweet Gum Board!

That's a good looking bowl. Something I've always wondered: do you glue it up while it's mounted on the lathe?

Dan, I like hos the grain works as a band near the top of the bowl. If you set the bowl out for display, use the ole carpenter's wisdom: put the bad side where it won't be seen.

Nice job Dan. :eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap It looks great from where I'm sitting. :thumbs_up:thumbs_up Don't worry, I've gotten myself in plenty of trouble with a mallet as well. It starts with a little tap, then the taps keep getting harder and harder and soon you've completely forgotten about all the hard work you put in and you are beating on it without mercy. Then...... well, we all know how that normally ends up.... :kamahlitu :qleft7::qright5: :new_blowi :eusa_doh: :BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:

Nice work!. Lot better than I can do. :thumbs_up

Gotta say its the first time I have heard of segmenting a bowl with a hammer, tho:eek:

Go

PS. Did you ever figure out why the jig stuck?

Charlie - HA! De-segmentation!

Gofor - The jig I use is a nut that screws onto my lathe, which is welded to a washer. I drilled three holes in the washer, and put grabber screws attached to a sacrificial oak block. (more or less the same as earl or charlie) I glue the bottom of the bowl to the sacrificial oak block.

What happened was, while I was turning the bowl, the nut got jammed up against the washer on the lathe REALLY tight.

Well... I couldn't get the blamed nut to let go, so I could unscrew the bowl off with the jig still attached. The wooden oak block is square, so I was just trying to bang on the corner so I could spin the whole thing backwards.

It's simple really! I could do a "De-Segmentation" demonstration on one of Charlie's bowls for the Goldsboro Shop Crawl this spring if you would like!:rotflm::gar-La;

Sully - I glued mine and turned it all at once. Although gluing ring by ring is possible. Earl glues ring by ring, Charlie glues two halves, turns them and then glues them together.

I did mine all as one piece... but will probably try different ways until I find a way that works for me
