This is another project completed over the holidays. The Stickley Poppy Table. I wanted to larn the jointery techniques. Made in Cherry with ammoniation then waterlox finish.
I take poor photos and the lighting in the gallery where I have the item is very poor for photos. This was the only pic that turned out well.
The top and the shelf are both shaped like a poppy flower with an irregular shape. The petals of the fllower are carved into both the top and shelf as the piece is solid cherry.
There were two items that I wanted to learn from this piece, the carving of the top and shelf as i recently took a carving class and also, the table has 5 legs. The structure of the table is unique as supporting the top is a small pentagon with a through dovetail on each side and a stringer that has a hidden dovetail into each leg. I cut each of these bu hand as opposed to using a dovetail jig. The lower shelf is irregular shape but each petal has a flat section that attaches the shelf using a dowel. I also screwed the leg to the shelf for added support and plugged with cherry.
The project was fun but if I were to make it again, I would scale up the size. This one was according to the plans and it is very small. I decided to place the piece in a gallery for sale.
