Simple cabinet making question

I have made a cabinet that will have slides for the drawers. The faceframe give me a 1 1/4 inch space for a spacer where the slide will be attached. My instructions that I am following says to use a 3" wide board for the slide to attach too. why would 3" be so important? The slide is about 1". Can I say make the width 1 3/4 inch? 3" is not required, but does provide a stronger base that won't twist -- if you use the 1-3/4" width, just be sure to attach it securely to the cabinet sides (glue and screws). Mount the slide in the center to allow for adjustment up and down.

If my spacer is about 1/16th greater than the faceframe could that be a problem? I have 1" poplar and 2 pieces of 1/4 birch.

No, the limiter is your drawer slide has to clear the Faceframe. A little proud is ok.
