Earlier this week I received an e-mail from a hay customer referring me to a large red oak tree that recently fell at a local equestrian farm. I drove out today to look at it before incurring the cost to transport my equipment.

Whoa..... 208" circumference at breast height! Looks like I can get two 8' long, 5'6" diameter logs out of it / 24,000 lbs total. That ought to produce some nice quartersawn red oak! Hopefully it won't have much metal or rot, but I'll know more Saturday when I go up to retrieve it.

Looks like Saturday morning is going to be busy...

For some reason this reminds me of that seen in jaws: "We're gonna need a bigger boat." :rotflm:

Nice tree! You're gonna have fun with that one.

Wow Scott, that's a honker! Do you have a saw with a 6' bar or will you have to make 2 cuts? The way that it's laying suggests that pinching of the bar could be problematic. Got one of those funny looking pulpwood bars? :dontknow: Be careful, that's a risky one to chunk out. Gonna use the crane?

A nice supply of firewood from the branches too.

Very cool Scott, after the recent detoothing of your mill blade I am sure your search for buried trash in the wood will be very thorough. :wsmile:

WOW! what a monster!!! Only once in my life have I seen a bigger oak on the ground: when we lived in Visalia, CA a while back I actually watched from our dining room window as a ?00' old California Live Oak, making a sound like 1000 pairs of Levi's being ripped in half, spontaneously uprooted from of our neighbor's front yard. God must have done it because He dropped it straight down the street, just clipping only one parked car, and no one was injured. It could have easily destroyed two houses, ours being one of them. Anyway, after the crew cut the rootball from the trunk so the trunk was flat on the ground, I got a picture of one big honkin' guy standing next to the trunk, which was twice overhead (guessing 12-13') :eek:; somewhere packed away I still have that photo. No, I'm not gonna look for it now, but I swear it is for real. I would have needed another moving van just to hold all the toothpicks they made from that tree.

The only point here is the one on the axe they had, so file this away under "So what"

What happens to the root ball? Does it get ground in to mulch or cut in to bowl blanks?

I have no idea but I can tell you this... my chainsaw ain't going near that root ball! :gar-La;

Cutting up that walnut root ball a few weeks back required me to cut away about 1/2 of the chain in order to get it back sharp...

Ivey, I wish that you were closer too. When it comes to 12,000 lb logs, it's nice to have some friends handy with plenty of muscle!

I got a rusty butter knife that'd be perfect for the job!
