Any of you ever seen anything like this? I came upon a couple boards of this very rare mahogany - reportedly from the only tree to exhibit this figure throughout. FWW did an exposè on the rare tree.

Here is a shot of one of my boards:

I'm like Jeff, in that I'm also familiar with quilted maple, buy not mahogony. That sure is some amazing looking wood! Up until this thread, the nicest wood I had ever seen used for a guitar was a violet stained, birdseye maple, (BC Rich base w/ no frets). I really like the look of that quilted mahogony!!:icon_thum:icon_thum Nice homepage! I really like that Avatar Deluxe!

Pretty wood! Is that the same source as this came from?

Ed,

Very likely from the same tree. Certainly isn't much of this around.

My source had told me a few years back that he found some at a furniture restoration cabinetmaker's shop in Maryland (I think) and the builder would not sell any of the wood unless it was in one of his pieces. When my buddy inquired as to the price of a coffee table, the reply was $38,000!
Yowza!

Pretty.....wood has such amazing variations in pattern, color and appearance. Lots of man-made materials out there that try, but none come close.

Here's an excerpt about the mahogany thread I posted

"...the top is one board 13ft. long and 37in. wide of figured mahogany- this board is from the famous tree cut in 1965 in the chicibul jungle (fine woodworking #54-1985 sept/oct. )"
