Proposed Classified Ad Policy Revision

Our Classified Ad Policy is vague concerning certain forms of Ads -- specifically Commercial or Service Ads by members. I've taken a crack at modifying our Policy (Red Text added) as follows:

Classified Ads Policy​

Members of the website may place advertisements in the Classified Section of the website. Ads must be placed in an appropriate category and are limited to woodworking-related items or services that are For Sale, or Wanted or are offered Free to fellow members. Ads may not contain links to off-site auction sites or public sales websites, but may include links to personal or reference websites related to the item in the Ad (e.g., manufacturer). Pictures are encouraged within the Ad and links to a member photo gallery on www.ncwoodworker.net or elsewhere are permitted.​

Ad content must relate to woodworking, tools, wood and wood products, accessories for woodworking equipment or workshop items. Members may use the Classified Section for one-time sale of woodworking items they make, but may not market production items for profit. Ads for items may be renewed (bumped) twice; if an item does not sell, the originator should consider reducing price before renewing the Ad. Commercial Ads or Services for Hire are not allowed. Members wanting to place commercial Ads should use the Contact Us link for options available. Any Ads that do not meet these criteria may only be posted with the express permission of a Staff member (who shall be named in the Ad), or the Ad will be moderated or deleted. Classified Ads are for members only; guests may browse Ads, but do not see any Member contact information.​

Not sure if this helps, we do have an "agree to terms" enabled in the ad software.

It is shown at the bottom of the ad form just before you submit.

Nothing is mentioned about commercial here.

Oh, and :thumbs_up :thumbs_up on the policy revision.

A few comments.

As best as I can tell, we can't enforce a 2 bump limit.

The way things are setup now, the add can be set to "Relist" yes or no. So might change the wording from renew/bump to relist?

Ads for items may be renewed (bumped) twice; if an item does not sell, the originator should consider reducing price before renewing the Ad.


When filling out a new ad, you do see a category for Services. There are no radio buttons to select types of services. If you so desire, I can look into removing Services from that page.

Commercial Ads or Services for Hire are not allowed.

We currently have this set to "0".

Minimum Forum Posts before user can add a new listing

This setting will allow you to set a required number of posts before a user will be able to post a new listing in the classifieds. Set the value to 0 to disable this feature.

This would at least cut down on the "I signed up today and ran an ad" folks.

This one stands out to me. There are quite a few members that post nothing and only submit their overpriced ads month over month. I would love to have a 1 post requirement or something before being allowed to post an ad. Say you have to do your intro in who we are.

Commercial ads are a means of providing financial support to NCWW, which benefits all members. Businesses or members that would like to place a Commercial Ad should use the Contact Us link; someone will respond back to you so that we can discuss the best options available.

Who is going to handle this? If you have more than one person handling this How will the left hand know want the right hand is or has done? You are talking about 3 months. Here is the info on Bumping from vBClassified..

The BUMP AD feature allows users to "bump" their listing to the top of a category by resetting the "TIME LISTED". The BUMP AD code does NOT affect the end time so if a listing is started for 14-days and after 7-days the user decides to "BUMP" their ad it will show at the top of the category as newly listed but it will only have 7-days remaining.

Chad, because most of us do not have the licensee username and password, we cannot read the vBClassified.com information.

Scott, I agree with your approach to encourage commercial advertisers to find a solution for their ads -- I may work on the language a little to shorten it, or perhaps we could create a separate page that could be a direct link from the Policy statement.

It appears that the correct language may be "relisting" and not "bumping" and since there doesn't appear to be any easy way to control or manage it, perhaps we could set ads to run for a maximum of 90 (or 120) days and then have them expire with no relisting (we can control the time parameters). Remember, the user can always submit a new ad at that point.

I think most agree that Service (wanted or provided) should not be allowed -- we just need to eliminate (turn off) category 5 in the vBClassified controls and they will be eliminated.

I'll try to post a revised version tomorrow. BTW, I noticed that when I open the Classified Policy, it is an editable template -- I hope the users can't modify it!

Rob At this time the listing are set to run up to 1 Month. and then stay in the site for 12 month in a closed state unless it is relisted. then the system will delete it. This was the way Steve wanted it setup. My $.02 is change the 12 months to 3 or 4 max then delete it.. As for as the relisting was put in to make it easier to resubmit a ad. I did not know there was a problem with relisting of a ad. I thought the problem was Commercial Ads being ran.. Oh well with the way this thread is going we our going to make a easy ad submiting a lot more harder. :confused_

At this time there are 46 "For Sale" items and 361 items Closed.

I have played :eusa_booh to long I will not say any more on this just let me or Jim know what to change.

The Service was never turn on.. I have taken it off (It is Gone)!!

I documented what I believe to be the system changes necessary to support the policy change.

Its a bit more involved than I first thought.
