OK, the woods in this are flame & fiddleback boxelder, walnut, cherry, and some dark exotic craft wood (name not recalled).

Walnuts and cherries go good on a banana split. the dark exotic looks like chocolate. The flame box elder looks like cherry juice on a banana. A bit of a stretch, but hey, it got your attention!

Here is the blank and then the the almost finished handle. It has one coat of minwax/tung oil on it. It will get about 4 more, then attach the scoop handle.

UPDATED PHOTO OF COMPLETED SCOOP! It measures 10" long, for good leverage in the ice cream bucket!

Dave that is cool. Did you do your own glues up or did you purchase the blank?

Re: Banana Split ice cream scoop

Scott: I did my own glue-up. But, that got me to thinking....what would a blank like that sell for (like on ebay)? Maybe that would make more sense than to try to sell the finished product. Less time involved, lower price point than the finished product, but possibly more volume in sales. With the labor involved in making the finished scoop, the kit ($13+tax) for the scoop handle, the cost of the wood/glue....I could not price this under $40 if i was going to sell it. Not many people are going to spend $40 for a designer ice cream scoop.

Scott: yup, exactly like that! Heck, I could probably get $25-30 for my 2x2x9" ice cream scoop blank, just because it is a whole lot nicer than the seller you linked to. That has a whole lot more profit margin in it, than turning it, buying the hardware, sanding (forever!), etc., and it leaves room for the crafts-person to do their own thing.

$40 would be an expensive scoop. You havfe a beautiful piece you've turned though.

It is a new one that Woodcraft offers for $12.99. It hides the end grain. The extra 3 bucks is worth it over the older style they had. Rockler's version also shows the end grain.

The Rockler version is a smooth 3/8" rod, and epoxy is used. the new one from Woodcraft has 3/8" threaded solid shaft, and I just did epoxy on it too.
