Not My Latest Project (But the one before the latest)

Hope everyone is doing well!

I posted my latest project a few days ago (Lego Table/Game Table aka Lego Containment System). I thought I would follow that one up with my second most recent project (completed July 24)). I have one more recent project to go to catch up (a horse saddle stand I'll post in the next few days).

Much like the Lego Table, this was another project commissioned for the nine year old son. To his credit, he is pretty into Chess and we were playing on a kind of junky board. In fact, I am no chess player, and I had to learn on some apps just to be able to keep up. To make the experience a little better, I built a chess board table.

Some details:
  • Walnut/Hard Maple.
  • Tapered legs with a bit of detail.
  • The chessboard is "floating" within the mitered top frame.
  • Square size is 2.25"
  • Dovetail drawers (the cheating machine cut kind with a harbor freight jig that does its job just good enough for me to not want to drive over it with my truck).
  • Target Coatings EM8000 Satin over EM1000 Sanding Sealer (my first use of Target Coatings and I was pleased). Sprayed with the ol' reliable Fuji Mini Mite 5 with a 1.3 tip and 3m PPS conversion kit.
  • The chess pieces are relatively inexpensive pieces from amazon..

No build photos; I am trying to get better at that.

Excellent - nice design. I particularly like the 'raised' board aspect, I had not seen that before.

That turned out great! Enough design details to make it interesting but they’re not overdone.

Really like the floating play area! I see plenty of enjoyment there battling your son.😊😊

Love that walnut! Very unique grain. Is that what you call claro walnut?

What is the finish?

Thanks! It's black walnut to the best of my knowledge (which is a bit limited). It's from the Hardwood Store of NC.

The finish is Target Coating's Sanding Sealer followed by their conversion varnish (EM 8000) in satin. I wanted a film finish vice a hard wax for more durability as well as a little depth/sheen. I typically have used General Finishes Enduro Clear Poly in the past as my waterborne clear, but I did not like the look of it over the walnut (way too "washed out"). I think the EM8000 provided enough warmth to make the walnut look good.
