I am looking to buy, make or swap (for metal to make or the scraper itself) for a wide scraper to use to bring the finial dimensions very close on flutes or spindles. I do the majority of the work with my Ewt rougher and it works really well. I just need something wide to have a good consistent easy to acquire final dia size... Thanks

I use a 2 inch Stanley wood chisel like you find at Home Depot. Slow the lathe down and just barely touch it to the turning. I take out any gouge marks then finish sanding with fine paper glued to a long wood block.

I may try the Stanley chisel like you said Mike. Do card scarpers do much or is this not really feasible in this application??? just wondering !!

A card scraper won't work across the grain on the lathe. You can scrape along the length with the lathe turned off. A wide chisel followed by sand paper glued to a long flat stick is the best way i found to make true cylinders.

If you make a couple common sizes you could make a card scraper the exact semi-circle to match the flute and pull it along the length to make a perfect cylinder after you have smoothed it with the chisel scraper and sandpaper.
