Met last night with Paul (Klingspor Raleigh) and some of the TWA leadership. The purpose was to plan a North Carolina Wood Working Show Case show at that Raleigh store. The meeting actually covered topics. Let me try to net this out.
- The show case will be on Saturday September 11th. Check in will start on Friday.
- This year they will have only three groups (Apprentice, Intermediate, and Open). In the shows they had four groups (Youth, Novice, Intermediate, and Open). Within each group they will have 14 categories. (scrollsaw, carving in the round, relief carving, face plate turning, spindle turning, pens, rockers, chairs, small boxes, tables, misc, and a few I don't remember.
- Ribbons will be awarded for each group/category. A gift certificate will be awarded for best in each group (apprentice, intermediate, open) as picked by the judges.
- There will be two additional gift certificates. A $75.00 certificate for wood workers choice. In other words the entrants get to vote for best in show. This prize is being donated by TWA. There will also be a $75.00 certificate for a people's choice. In other words visitors get to vote for best in show. I committed NCWW to donate this award. If that is an issue I will cover it out of pocket.
- Like in the past years we are being asked to provide helpers (check-in, clean-up, serve lunch, do demo's, man a NCWW info booth).
- Klingspor has lined up a number of vendors to attend. Paul did not share the list.
- Klingspor will also be giving away door prizes through out the day.
- Paul also indicates there would be some "show specials"
- Paul is looking for NCWW to help generate interest and to encourage our members to enter items.
Now the bigger news.
A couple years back Roger (East Wake Hardwoods) opened a gallery. That has developed into a non profit called WONC (Woodworkers of North Carlina). They had plans to open a new gallery in downtown Raleigh but did not have enough funding. Anyway WONC will be leasing 500 sq ft of the Raleigh Kilngspor Store for their gallery. This gallery will open in September. They have a website under construction www.woncgallery.org. The gallery will allow WONC members to item item for display and sell. Rules are still being refined but to enter items in the gallery you will need to be a WONC member (fill out a form and pay $30 dues), items are displayed for 30 days at a time, there will be a jury process to enter items...... The gallery is open to all NC residence.
I see the WONC as a positive for WW in the state.
