Sitting here clicking links that I found on NCWoodworker and then following "interesting" leads, I came across this:
http://www.cswoods.com/csw_browseburl.php?woodspecies=maple,+soft&Submit=Submit

Man, he's got some purty wood but he's real proud of it too. Considering that I've got a couple slabs of Ambrosia Maple with burl and all kinds of other neato figure in them, I'm sittin' on some big bucks. :eusa_danc Too bad I ain't planning on selling them anytime soon. I wanna make sumpthin outta them and see if I'm any good at it.

David did you ever finish that very pretty table you were working on when I was down your way. You should post a pic or two of that.
Thanks Mark

Not yet but I'm getting close. Finally got me a router and now I'm working on building the sled for it. Once I get that done I can level everything out, make the legs/base for it and then try my hand at that bar top coating. Keep yer fingers crossed. If all goes as planned, it will be my best work yet.

That is some nice Big Leaf Maple Burl. Considering it is almost impossible to get any out of Oregon now, the price seems very reasonable. The paperwork is insane in order to harvest out there now.

On the other hand.. Red Maple Burl is pretty rampant here and from what I can discern not much different than big leaf except a tad softer and less figured.

On further browsing.. the claro walnut pricing is insane. The had a bundle of curly with major defects:

Total Board Feet: 289.94'
Price per bft: $ 18.46
List Price: $ 5,353.55
(We do break packs. List price for total bf.)
Other information:
Highly figured with curl and feathers. Highly defected; checks, knots, sapwoodwood, wande. Some consecutive cuts. RMD.
Inventory # 0004907

holy mackeral..

"How do you "Quarter Cut" with bark on both edges and pith running down the middle of the board"

sounds like CS made up words to me.. That must have been written by someone that doesn't understand wood. It would be called PITH to me otherwise known as a heartwood split with two potential usable boards right and left of the PITH. This wood is called QUARTERSAWN.. ;)

What we need is some creative words to describe our lumber, like pippy, bees wing, angle step, cats paw, mottle, peanut shell, pommelle and snow flake :gar-Bi

Hi, I'm an editor with Carolina Country magazine. Just thought I would share the photo of the burl that you mentioned. Here is the caption that ran with it:

Big burl
Here is a picture of a large burl on an oak tree located at Union Academy School in Monroe. The man in the tree picture is my foreman Jim Sturgill.

Thanks for posting the picture Tara, given the fact that the burl appears to wrap around the entire circumference I wonder what stimulated the growth and if there is an old cable or chain encased in it. :wsmile:
