I bought a house with a garage and my wife thought that she'd be able to park her car in it. I don't think that she understands. "Well it's a two car garage. I'll park on my side and you can play with your tools on your side". I still don't think that she understands. So..... I bought her some pearls and gained control of the garage. I've bought a table saw (which is still in the box and it's killing me) and am currently shopping for a jointer. It was the online shopping that led me to ncwoodworker.net. I live in Raleigh. I am handy and have a plumbing and HVAC background. I am a beginning woodworker with no contacts in the craft. All advise is welcome and appreciated. That's why I'm here. I am looking forward to sharing ideas. - woodchuck

Chuck, welcome to NCWW. I am glad you were able to join us. You will find your time spent here both informative and enjoyable. All of our members are a great bunch of folks and they love to share advice and ask questions. Feel free to request a Photo Album by using the "Other Links" button on the menu bar at the top of your screen. Then you can post a few pix of that big shop of yours that you bought with those pearls. Feel free to post some pix of your TS even if it is still in the box. We all love to share some occasional tool porn around here.

Chuck, you've already demonstrated skill in woodworking. The successful negotiation with loyl regarding tools and shop space qualifies you as a master woodworker

I'm gald you bartered your way into the other half of the garage! Welcome to the site. What kind of TS do you have? Too bad you didn't find this site before you bought it, Insominac has a great saw for sale, and it's already tuned up. Do you have you eye on a particular jointer?

Welcome Chuck, I am glad you found us. Funny, I bought a house with a garage also, that must be a local incentive around these parts. It sounds like you are heading in the right direction to making some serious saw dust. Please don't hesitate to ask about anything you want to know or for any help you might need. You never know a member could actually live down the street from you. See you around!!!!

Welcome to the site! We'll be glad to help you spend your money, ah, I mean help you select tools! A word of caution, empty space doesn't stay empty for long. Get the saw set up and some wood laying around so that it doesn't lend itself to re-appropriation! Add new tools as soon as you can. Maybe even tape out the tentative shop layout on the floor! Glad to have you on board.

Welcome to the site, Chuck. It's always exciting to equip a new shop and you're lucky already to have found a shop with a house attached to it -- easier to get to the shop that way! Members here will be happy to offer hands-on experience with about any tool you might need, so don't hesitate to ask questions about what to buy and where to get it. Have fun and let us all know what kind of woodworking you are most interested in -- after all it is more than making smaller pieces out of big ones and ending up with a pile of sawdust....

Seriously, we're happy to have you join the family.

Chuck,
I forgot to add in my first post, that no garage is ever big enough. Start now with the negotiations for dedicated shop space. Hopefully you bought a large enough piece of land with your house to accomodate such....

I bought the Bosch 4000-09 10" saw. It's a portable and got pretty good reviews. Will it make a good starter saw? What about a jointer? I was thinking about the Delta JT160. Has anyone tried it? - woodchuck

You could do better. Generally bench top jointers don't have the length, mass or power to do anything but small work. You might consider looking into the Rigid 6", I have one and am very happy with it. Or Grizzly has a wide assortment of jointers for not much more money. My .02,
Dave:)

Welcome Aboard Chuck,

A friend of ours just told us that he bought a garage (his new shop ) that came with a house, and Irene & I always say that we bought a dock and a body of water with a house attached to it. Since now that we took up woodworking, we have added shop to the listing.

We also are newbies to woodworking and this site, and have found both to be a great experience. Glad to have you with us.

Duke & Irene
