I closed the thread "Convert to 220" since the discussion was getting rather personal ("Don't get mad"..."You don't know what you're talking about"). People getting upset over electricity? Shocking! Also sent a PM to the people involved in the discussion.

dlrion wrote: Listen, I am not trying to insult you at all... don't get mad.
And ncguy77 responded: I'm not mad nor insulted but you don't know what you're talking about.

I think a lot of this thread & the DC thread had similar undertones of superiority & making mountains out of molehills. You'd think people were designing an automobile manufacturing plant or a moon rocket with the technical mumbo jumbo they were spouting - for a simple table saw or dust collector. C'mon, folks. It's a hobby, not rocket surgery.

Bas,

At the risk of sounding as if I'm trying to rub salt in a wound (and I'm MUCH too nice of a guy to do that:wink_smil), I think you should include a link to a thread we close with cause. This way all the mods can take a look to see what went wrong. I think it helps with consistency of service.

Point well taken Ray - thanks for the reminder! I updated my post with the link and a couple of comments that were on the edge. Ncguy77 also finished his post with "At this point in time I'm gonna try hard to not reply further because I think the most salient points have been made.", i.e. we're not going to resolve this argument.

Jeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzz !!!! this thread went downhill after I had made a post in it early on. If you look at the times of the posts where things started to get funky you will find that it was the wee hours of the morning. Perhaps we could make some vB code changes to disallow posts on electricity or dust collection past 11:00 PM when folks who should be sleeping tend to get touchy, combative and cranky. :rotflm:

Maybe a subliminal grow up message implanted in their "database" when accessing these types of topics:help::dontknow:

That thread had run it's course. Good call on the closure. I think the lack of sun shine is getting to folks. Sure hope the sun shines and it warms up soon.

I'm starting to wonder if there shouldn't some kind of limit to threads. When they have 45 responses posted to the original, when they have several pages of responses... they generally have little or nothing to do with the original subject. At that point, the best thing you can say about them is that they are awkward, and difficult to follow.

A perfect example of this is PChristy's thread on computer help please.

It went from help request to junk later on in the thread.

For the record, both dlrion and ncguy77 replied to my PM in a very nice manner, expressing their apologies for letting things go too far. Sometimes, moderation works exactly like it's supposed to!
