It's been cold this week in my shop (car port) and sometimes wet:sad_smile
But I still got a little bit done.
I finished 2 new Oland tools with a fingernail grind:jiggy: a 3/16 and a 1/4.
So of course I had to try them, The fingernail grind works [strike]great[/strike] SUPER on the inside of a bowl, but for me I like the old grind better on the outside, one thing I have found out I havent reached for anything but an orland tool:eusa_thin

Thought y'all might like a few WIP pictures, in other words I just dont have anything else to post :rolf:

Cleaning up the face of a ring getting it ready to glue on a bowl

Now I am going to have to run it through a drum sander to get it perfectly flat and smooth

OK OK so it's not really a drum sander but it does get it smooth and flat

Now gluing it on the bowl and a second bowl with the pattern ring glued on and ready to turn

And turning that pattern ring

Just not enough good weather to finish them:crybaby2:

Thanks for looking

I hope it dries out and warms up, I want to see that bowl when you're finished.

That looks like a drum sander to me...except the drum doesn't spin on this one!

How do you keep the rust off your tools being in the open like that?

BTW...NICE BOWLS! Can't wait to seem them finished.

Re: Cold week in the shop - Oland Tool Comments

I'm with you after building and using my 1/4" Oland tool, I find I'm using it alot. Roughed out a small bowl with it the other day and it sure made it easy. Can't wait to try it on end grain like a box. The only thing I noticed is that I ground one end of the tool blank into a "regular" grind and the other end into a slight fingernail grind. When I used the "fingernail" end I found the edge wanted to chip very easy. I reground to a "regular" grind and hollowed the bowl and roughed out the outside and had no chipping. I think I'm going to try grinding a tool bit with a lesser angle say 40 deg. and see how that works. I also found that I have better luck grinding the tool bit out of the handle and on a platform rather than leaving it in the handle and using the vari-grind jig. I found that after getting my 45 deg angle if I then start going side to side while leaving the tool bit flat I get what looks like a Spindlemaster grind (round bottom for the bevel and a slight round nose for the tip). The Oland Tool is going to be real fun playing with and trying diff grinds and angles. Think I'm going to try the ball mill style tool next.

By the way didn't want to end this and say that is going to be a great looking segmented bowl.

Earl,

I've got to give you credit man, everytime I'm in my shop and its cold or hot (I do have a/c), I think of you working in the carport. And I wince. Such great craft coming out of such a humble shop:icon_thum. Well at least clean up is easy, just start up the leaf blower and away you go:lol:.

Earl, you do truly awesome work under adverse working conditions. What you could produce with an enclosed work space is almost beyond comprehension . Way to go dude!!! :eusa_clap:wsmile:
