Well I managed to buss-up the tool rest on my Jet midi yesterday :realmad: :BangHead:
i won't go into details other than to say it involved a large piece of walnut I got from FredP and some less-than-steller-more-like-stupid techniques for making it manageable :sad11:
As they say " hindsight is always 20/20 " :embaresse

Since I now have to buy a new one anyway I thought I would get some feedback as to what and where before I commit any dead presidents to the solution. I will probably get more than one now as the 6" is perfect for pens but I would like something larger as well . The banjo is fine it is the rest that is trashed :eusa_doh:

Any input would be appreciated :icon_thum

the post is 5/8". you got ant welder friends? 2 pieces of 5/8 rod welded together to form a "T" would not only work but be much more comfortable to use.

You know a welder, but I'm a little far from you.

Story of my life bro :wsad: My next door neighbor welds but he doesn't turn :nah:
Perhaps he can still help :eusa_pray

oh well ....I do have my scroll saw

Well now that you broke the rest best throw the entire lathe away. You need a bigger one.:tool::tool::tool:

If I could find the rod locally, I'd build one, just because I like to weld. But without buying bulk, I don't know where to get any. Lowe's doesn't carry it, tractor supply does, but it's zinc coated, doesn't make for good welding.

Now see that would be a highly unlikely situation to be in if'n you had a POWERMATIC 3520B.:gar-Bi

Sorry to hear about your tool rest misadventure. :wsad: My spirit is willing but my 225 amp welder is currently producing 0 amps until I rewire it. :BangHead:

I have a stick welder, it sits right beside my table saw, jointer, lathe and all the other tools I have but don't know how to use.

Robert, it sounds to me like this whole situation is Fred's fault.:gar-Bi

He is totally responsible for giving you a huge piece of walnut that was obviously too large for your lathe. Therefore, he should replace your lathe with a larger one of suitable size.:eusa_danc:banana:

Sorry Fred, I had to do it!:gar-La;

Bite the bullet and get a new rest from Craft Supplies. The tool steel rod across the top will clean up your skew work especially. No dings makes it much easier to get a clean cut.

Before you drop that kind of cash send Woodwrangler a pm. He's got some one that can make the samething. Not sure of the price:dontknow:.

As far as buying steel stock to make someting like that. Go by a steel scrap yard I picked up a 5/8 rod 5' long for less than $3.00.

I'm pretty sure the Lowes by me carries steel rod. Its in the area where the bolts/nuts/sheet metal is.

Other than the suggestions for making one, I have really wanted to invest in a "S" shaped rest for bowl work. It would help a lot to get the rest closer in when doing bowls. So Buy a curved rest and make a straight rest????
