I am attempting a cartridge/antler pen for a friend. I wonder what finish to use on the antler. Anyone know what will or won't work best. I've never used CA and don't have enough antler to experiment and still have enough to make a pen for myself.

I use rattle-can lacquer on my cartridge/antler pens. So far it works out well.

Hi Charles, I am with Georege, just use laquer, I like Deft brand laquer but most will work just fine, you might want to experiment with the CA finish after this because you will like the results, it will stay nice and polished for many years. Aloha.

Unless you expose a lot of "marrow" while turning the antler, they polish up really nice with MicroMesh and no finish. Hand oils will add a nice patina to it over time. I generally use a CA finish, as for me it is the quickest.
Charles, the next time I am in Wilmington visiting the in-laws I'll get in touch and see if I can give you a CA finish lesson. It's not hard, and it's fast.

Dave:)
