Here is the peppermill I turned for my Dad. He came to visit a couple days after Christmas, so I didn't finish it until he arrived. He enjoyed the turning process as much as the mill itself!

The pics look like the base is small, but that is just perspective. It is actually slightly larger than the middle.

Wow Ed, that's really cool. From one view the laminations look like they spiral aorund it, and in the other it looks like an Alaskan totem pole. Did you glue up the blank???
I really need to try to make one of those someday :icon_thum

I did the glue up. Maple, Cherry, and Walnut. Cut on a bias and re-glued. Really makes a neat pattern!

That's just about the coolest thing ever! You did a great job! Some day, I'd like to learn how you did the glue up.

Thanks guys. It is a 10" mill. Doing this on a Jet 1014 is a bit of a challenge!

Reggie, the glueup isn't anything special, just TBII. Planed the pieces to the thickness I liked. My scrap collection was a little short so I added the 2 solid Cherry beads to get the length I needed.

Stunning! You dad, like my oldest sister, likes to see the project process as well as the finished project. Very Cool!

Ed, have you ever used the ceramic mechs.? The one you linked to looks like it would be a lot easier to use...at least the instructions are easier to understand.

I haven't used the ceramic ones. The stainless mechanisms work nicely and are easy to assemble. Two things II did learn about them. If you make the mill a little too short, you can cut down the shaft and peen it over. If you make the mill too long, you can drill the bottom recess a little deeper.

Ed, I was just reading over the instructions from the WC link. Do you make yours using a tenon on the body fitting into a recess in the top, or a tenon on the top fitting into the bore in the body?
How do you drill the holes. The instructions mention a multi-spur bit (I'm assuming thats a Forstner) and a spade bit to finish off the depth if needed. Do you drill or turn the bttom recess (1 5/8" dia.) for the base mech?
Sorry for all the questions
