How can I make a deep, ellipse shaped hole with handtools?

I'm working on a project which requires me to make a hole about three inches deep which is shaped like an ellipse. Is there a way to do this with hand tools and a drill? Oh by the way its not a hole that goes all the way through, so its really more of a deep mortise I guess.

"L" Shaped Desk

I have it in my head that I want to build myself an "L" shaped desk but can't find any plans. I don't really care about design because I want to make it with frame/panel construction. What I need are dimensions. Anyone have or know of a good plan? All standard searches turned up junk.

New Droplet shaped Bottle Stoppers...
