I am refinishing an old kitchen hutch top that was originally made from mostly poplar with hard pine shelves and a few minor pieces of trim from oak.
I need to lighten the old wood and even it out some. I plan on using oxalic acid for that. Any tips you can provide for that is also welcome...
RIT dyes, typically thought of for fabric, have been used in dyeing wood. It is supposed to let the grain show. I know that it's water-based, so I'd need to raise the grain first. Has anyone used RIT dyes in their woodworking?
I got me some Transtint dye and went to work on a poplar picture frame. While it turned out "just ok", I found that even on a small piece like this, I had to really work fast as I used alcohol as a carrier.

I've dissolved the dye in denatured alcohol and both sprayed and wiped it, but I'm getting a lot of "spotting" and streaking from what looks like the solvent evaporating too quickly.

I have a tendency to acquire info for future projects FAR in advance of starting them. On that note, can wood that has been dyed be glued without difficulty using CA or PVA or do I need to mask off glued areas like I would do with traditional stains ? Thanks :wsmile:
Needing to color some curly maple ply and was thinking about using a dye. This is new stuff for me and was wondering HOW you apply a dye? Is it mixed with the clear-coat? Feed me knowledge oh wise ones!
