The reason Offerman was on Letterman was not for his woodworking or writing talents which are nothing to sneeze about as Dave and Fine woodworking realized- it was because he is an actor in the cast of the TV comedy show "Parks & Recreation" where he plays Ron Swanson. A bearded Offerman (photo taken when the show was on hiatus) has an article in and was on the cover of the new (Dec 11) Fine Woodworking.

It almost sounds like he claimed the jig he used to flattening large slabs as his own invention, but it has been around for many years. Anyone ever seen the video of the guys flattening a really long (20'+?) plank with a router similar rig on a sweep arm and all attached via a cable to a drum with crank handle?

Well.... sure....Letterman doesn't seek woodworkers for his show. Who thinks that?

Clearly, none of us will get on national TV for flattening large slabs of wood. But it's an entertaining interview and his answers were either hilarious or accurate technically, or both. Most of us windbags would use far more words to describe "router" to a lay audience. His answer was right on. Also, his answer to the question about the cost of a handmade wooden canoe was also accurate, about 20 G's. I wouldn't do it for a penny less!
