Why a ZCI is a good idea on a bandsaw

Are the holes in the throat place necessary? I have had some stuff catch in the holes and wonder if it might be better without them.

I don't have holes in mine, and end up with so much sawdust on the table behind the cut it actually starts to lift the board. Off to the drill press!!
