Stickers

Wondering what the preferred wood/material is for stickers. Got my first sawmill lumber and need to stack and sticker. Thanks. Any helpful hints also appreciated.

same as the wood you are stacking to prevent staining

I used the scraps from the wood I was milling which initially was cedar. Later I used the cedar strips for other woods just because I had them. I've not had any staining issues. The cedar stickers were fairly well dried by the time I used them with other wood - beech, walnut , pecan.

The lumber I bought is 4/4 and 8/4 white oak. Can I use some dry poplar for the stickers

Yes, make them about a inch square. 16" but no more than 24" spacing. Make sure the sticks align top to bottom. White oak needs to air dry slowly, especially the 8/4 or it will check. Perfect time of the year to dry outside but you want to protect the stack from hot dry March winds.

Also seal the ends ASAP. I've used latex paint I had laying around with good results.
